Menstrual Hygiene Management

Delivering period pants for women in East Timor

RoundTrip Foundation has distributed forty sets of period pants in Timor-Leste (East Timor)

to young women at university and young women with disability

Each person has five sets of period pants and a leak-proof bag for keeping them in when they need washing. Period pants are a kind-of new product on the market and they are making a huge difference to the way that young women in Australia and other wealthy nations manage their menstrual flows. Period pants are more environmentally friendly than disposable products, such as pads and tampons, cheaper and easier to manage than menstrual cups and they are culturally acceptable.

At RoundTrip Foundation we are keen to make sure that our investments have an impact, so we conducted a survey with women as they received their period pants – we asked what they thought about this new technology. There was a lot of excitement about the possible ease of managing menstrual flow, and the reduction of the need to buy products. There was also a little nervousness around the ability of such a non-bulky product to prevent leaks during the day. We  will be following up with recipients in six months to see how they feel about the period pants after they have a chance to use them.

We would like to thank Modibodi for their generous donation of period pants and SafariBookings for their generous sponsorship for shipping the period pants and conducting the surveys in Timor-Leste.
