At our bakery school in Sri Lanka, the 2017-18 class of girls have all graduated (the 7th batch of graduates to do so, since we began in 2014). Half of the class did exceptionally well in both the final oral and practical exam, with average marks of more than 90%. We are proud to say the lowest average mark by any student was 82%, which shows great levels of ability, enthusiasm and dedication. In the words of Janaka de Silva, our project director in Sri Lanka:

β€œThe graduation ceremony was a simple one, held on 14th February. We awarded the graduates their certificates with great honour and pride. It was amazing to see yet another group of young women dramatically change their lives within a very short time. We invited the chief prelate of the village temple, Ven.Dhammika Thero, as our special guest. He showed immense pleasure in seeing the achievement of the graduates and blessed all of them with a bright future – he also made a humble appeal for the girls to continue living their lives in a meaningful way.”

Last week all the graduates had interviews for internships, and we already have five that are confirmed to start from the 1 April 2018. We expect to be able to confirm internship offers for the remaining graduates very soon.

The 8th batch of bakery school students will commence their course on 6 March 2018 – there will be 11 students in this next semester (which runs until August-September).
